Without any prospects for a new one, and after weeks of consideration capped by a small emotional meltdown, I have quit my job.
No notice, no reason. Just called and told them I wouldn’t be coming in today, or any other day.
And I swear to God, I feel about 100 pounds lighter.

Hey you, sorry I couldn’t talk earlier.. How are you? This is probably for the best, now this will give you free time to look for another job and also help you let go of all this anger and anxiety. You are a smart, talented, beautiful person, there should be no reason why you would not be able to find a job, just don’t get discouraged when you are turned down - That is their loss!

Me: And you didn’t tell me.
It’s a good feeling, isn’t it? Though, of course, those pesky considerations of reality have a way of spoiling the moment. Nothing like the vision of being homeless to ruin the mood.
At least you should be able to get another bartending job without too much trouble. That’s the beauty of jobs like bartending–once you know how to do it, you can do it anywhere. I know you’ve grown beyond tending bar, but it can be something to fall back on while you look for more satisfying employment.
So–what is it that you REALLY want to do? What’s stopping you from achieving that dream? Spend some time thinking about it, then write down the characteristics of your dream job. On another piece of paper, write down the barriers (real or imagined) that are keeping you from having that job. Sometimes just being able to look at a list of what you want and what you need to do to have it can make the good things seem less unattainable, and the negative things less intimidating.

One of those things that most of us dream of doing (or at least have dreamed of sometime in the past) — quitting our jobs. Calling in and saying “I’m not coming back.” Scary, exhilarting, and utterly necessary. :)

I did that once, but I had only been working there two days. Good for you, Brick, although I will miss the stories. I hope you can find an equally entertaining (for me), if more pleasant (for you), occupation.
