She’s Rolling, I’m Revolted
July 11th, 2007 — Television
I fell asleep on the couch last night with the t.v. on, as I am wont to do. I opened my eyes to a revolting sight. On News 2 This Morning Julie Kroenig was describing a video that played alongside her very blonde head. It was of a 3, maybe 4 year-old girl, obviously under the influence of ecstasy. The adults in the car were saying, “She’s rolling! She’s rolling!,” while the child’s eyes fluttered back in their sockets. It was one of the most disturbing, sickening things I have seen on local news in a long time. The story, however, was not local. In fact, the only news they had was that a pamphlet in the car led investigators to the child’s mother.
Having worked in a newsroom for a couple of years, I am 99% certain the reason why they ran that story is because they had that “compelling” video. It got my attention, alright. It made me want to vomit. A toddler on hard drugs is not the first thing I want to see upon waking. I imagine there are others out there like me.
I don’t fault News 2 for running the video. It’s a “talker,” and they are in the business of ratings. But, for the first time in my life I find myself wondering if they should have waited until the 10 p.m. newscast to show something like that. Not that I would have found it any less sickening late at night, but now I’m going to be thinking about that horrifying scene all day. It was truly scarring.
