I just bought a membership to Media Bistro’s AvantGuild, which made me realize how few websites I actually am willing to pay for. I’ve paid to be a member of DavidLynch.com, and was a TypePad customer for years. Other than those two things, and the AvantGuild, the only other premium web service I pay for is Flickr Pro. What about you? What web content or service do you pony up dough for?
Bonus question: Have you ever “tipped” a blogger using one of their presumptuous “donate here” options?

Once, though that was after a plea for money.
I’ve got a button on my page (the Martini Fund) simply because I won’t turn down free money if someone’s giving it away, but I’d be extremely surprised if anyone ever used it.
Like Sean said, I’ve donated after people have made it clear there was a need.
I pay for LiveJournal, flickr Pro, IMDb Pro (it’s good, but lately I’m not sure it’s truly worth it to me), Billboard.com (comes with print subscription), and MusicRow.com & Row Fax. And I always buy my shareware. I don’t think there are many other sites I use that offer a pro version. Most media sites don’t seem worth it to me.
And of course we use Netflix and we do the Amazon Prime thing, but I don’t that’s quite the spirit of the question.
Oh, and I’m still deciding on Backpack.
I’ve paid for davidlynch.com and I’m a current Flickr Pro member. Other than that, bupkis.
And I’ve never made a “donation” to a blogger, although I have paid money to web entities when the need has been sufficiently sold to me (3Wk.com is one example).
Yep.
I also pay for Flickr Pro because I wanted more sets and more space, I pay for LiveJournal to keep my Site Meter (though with some changes they’ve made in the last year, that may not be necessary, but it’s not expensive) and that’s it, I think.
And no, I’ve never put anything in the tip jar on a blog. I’m not a fan of those but I have donated money for a specific cause that was noted on a blog post.
I currently pay BlueHost to host my site. I also subscribe to MLB.com so I can listen to baseball games online.
I have tipped in the past if I liked someone well enough and I thought they put a lot of time in effort in their blog. Or, if they have ads, I’ll click on them because I think they will benefit (although I know that’s a small amount of dough.)
I don’t know. I like to encourage writers to write and if it will buy them a beer for their work, I don’t mind doing it. Usually it’s smaller bloggers because I’m figuring the A-List is doing just fine. Knowing that my life gets in the way a lot, I figure it’s not a bad thing to do and I don’t think it’s presumptious (well, it is on some blogs big time. I’m not disagreeing with you on that but I don’t mind tipping) but if I think they deserve it, I will pony up.
Twice.
Once for Lileks, once for someone else.
For Lileks, because he earns it. For the someone else because they expressed a need.
I pay for MediaBistro and FlickrPro (renewed 2x, so very worth it).
MediaBistro, meh. I likely won’t renew.
I have used a tip jar once. It just seemed like she was having such a bad day, so I gave her enough to cover a big margarita.
I pay dreamhost for hosting. Period. Nothing else.
Tipping a blogger? Yeah, I gave one a tip one time that I was gonna rip her site down if she didn’t leave me alone. Must have worked because I haven’t heard from her since…
Yes, I have actually donated money to a blogger (insert gasp here). Unfortunately, the blogging fame went to her head and she stopped soon after. People wrote to her bitching about how they just donated $5-20 dollars to a blog that came to a halt. She was the least bit apologietic and explained that blogging took so much out of her. Humpf!
