Apparently when talking about clothing, the term “empire waist” is not pronounced em-pyre, but om-peer. In that case, I’ll just avoid the usage if at all possible.

Apparently, I have been pronouncing it wrong too!!! :)
Regardless of how you pronounce it, it’s universally unflattering. Avoid it at all costs!

I only recently learned about dust ruffles. I’ve never heard of this “empire waist” that you mention. ;)
I made this same mistake a few weeks ago and my wife laughed and laughed at me. Doubly funny because I know more than the average straight guy about fashion, musical theater, the life and times of Paul Lynde, etc.
both pronunciations are correct. the om-peer is simply the french pronunciation.
Whoever told you that is full of crap.
