Because my walk to and from work is nearly three miles round-trip, I get dressed for work in the morning and then put sneakers on. Dress slacks, nice sweater, jewelry to match, then my New Balance tennis shoes. I carry dress shoes that match what I am wearing in my bag, then slip those on once I get to work. I am the biggest dork in America.

No you’re not. You are now officially an urban dweller.
Congrats, I guess.
I bet some Adidas or Pumas would look slightly less dorky…..time to hit your nearest Urban Outfitters.
@CeeElCee Yeah, but my shoes are so busted. They are not at all stylish. They are partly pink, for Christ’s sake. I look goofy, I assure you, but bunions are worse.
@christy It’s on my to-do list right after Christmas. I’ve got my eye on a few pairs.
You’re NOT the biggest dork in America. Forget your “dress” shoes so you have to walk around in your tennis shoes/dress pants combination … now you’re the dork. Advice from one reformed dork to another almost-dork. Buy a pair of shoes. Take to work. Leave in desk drawer. Trust me on this.
I think pretty much everyone who works in an office in SF does this
I need to get more stylish sneaks. This is my problem.
Newbs are cool. Grandma white REeboks, not so much. Especially if you wear them with pantyhose and a skirt.
Zoiks.
That’s standard for working wimmens in SF.
I wouldn’t say “biggest dork” either; rather, you’ve joined working women dorkdom. While I see the practicality, it still looks humorous to me. What might make the difference between workdrone dress clothes and walking shoes are the socks you wear. Stay away from bargain Target bobby socks, get something comfy yet stylishly (or even anti-stylishly) funky socks. You kinda stand out already anyway, right? Unless it’s so prevalent that no one notices any more. This is not the case in Oregon, where it’s usually Birkenstocks. Even more hilarious looking.
